"I'll Never Love Again" is a song from the 2018 pic A Star Is Born, performed by its stars Lady Gaga and director Bradley Cooper whose character sings the final chorus in the flashback scene. The soundtrack contained both versions of the song including the extended version that featured Gaga as the sole performer. Gaga wrote the song with Natalie Hemby, Hillary Lindsey, and Aaron Raitiere. Both tracks were produced by Lady Gaga and Benjamin Rice.

The vocal has received widespread disquisitional acclaim and has reached the top of the Slovakian digital charts, the acme-ten of the record charts in Republic of hungary, Ireland and Scotland, and the digital charts of Hellenic republic, combined-Europe, Luxembourg and Spain. "I'll Never Dear Again" received a gimmicky hit radio release in France as the album'due south third unmarried on May 27, 2019. It won the Grammy Award for All-time Song Written for Visual Media, a yr after the album'due south atomic number 82 unmarried "Shallow" won in the same category.

Background and composition [edit]

When Gaga was getting ready to film the final scene of A Star Is Built-in, where she sings "I'll Never Love Once more", the singer got a telephone call that her babyhood friend Sonja Durham was in her final moments of Phase IV cancer. Gaga left the set and drove to run into Durham, but she arrived ten minutes after her friend died. She asked Durham's married man if she should return to filming; he replied, "Yous've gotta do what Sonja would want y'all to practise", then she returned to the fix. Co-star and managing director Bradley Cooper was supportive of Gaga's loss just Gaga was adamant about finishing the scene, and then she stepped on the set and sang "I'll Never Dearest Again". The singer said, "[Sonja] gave me a tragic gift that twenty-four hour period and I took it with me to [the] set, and I sang that song for Jackson and for her on that very same day within an 60 minutes."[i]

Along with the flick version, the soundtrack also contains an extended version. Gaga wrote the vocal with Natalie Hemby, Hillary Lindsey, and Aaron Raitiere.[2] [three] Both tracks were produced by Lady Gaga and Benjamin Rice.[4] The song is performed in the key of G major with a moderate tempo of 54 beats per minute in common fourth dimension. It follows a chord progression of Madd2–Em7–Cmaj9–D9sus in the verses and Gadd2–Emvii(no3)–Cmaj9/E–D9sus in the chorus. Gaga's vocals span from Gthree to E5.[5] Brian Truitt of Usa Today described the song as a "weepy" ballad.[6]

Release and performance [edit]

The song was first chosen as the third single from the soundtrack on May 27, 2019 in France, where it was serviced to contemporary hit radio stations.[7] Later soundtrack release, the song debuted at number 36 on the Billboard Hot 100 nautical chart in the United States[eight] and has since sold 226,000 copies in the country, while accumulating 66 1000000 streams.[9] Additionally, the song has reached the peak ten position in Hungary, Ireland and Scotland, and the top ten of digital charts in Hellenic republic, Spain and Luxembourg, reaching the chart summit in Slovakia.

Critical reception [edit]

The song received universal acclaim. In her review of the pic, Melina Newman of Billboard chosen the ballad "stunning".[10] The magazine's Tatiana Cirisano ranked Lady Gaga's performance of "I'll Never Love Once more" as the moving picture's best scene and wrote, "Not only are the lyrics devastatingly beautiful, simply Gaga/Ally showcases her full, skyscraper-high range."[11] Jon Pareles of The New York Times compared the song to Harry Nilsson's "Without You" and Eric Carmen'due south "All by Myself", and complimented Gaga's "old-schoolhouse finesse, timing, emotionality and lung power".[12] Pitchfork 's Larry Fitzmaurice called the song a "stunning, heart-wrenching closer" and wrote, "... even though 'I'll Never Love Again' is plenty constructive on its ain, the dialogue-included version of the vocal dramatically cuts out in its concluding seconds the same manner the film does: jumping back in time from Gaga's time-stopping operation to a pivotal and heartbreaking scene that only enhances the vocal'south emotional caliber".[xiii]

In his film review, Ty Burr of The Boston Globe said Gaga'southward "climactic memorial" performance of the song "will leave yous a soggy mess whether you like it or not".[14] Scott Feinberg of The Hollywood Reporter predicted the vocal would earn Gaga an Academy Honor nomination for Best Original Song.[fifteen] USA Today 's Patrick Ryan wrote, "And with 'I'll Never Love Again,' the movie'southward devastating emotional closer, Gaga gets her own Whitney Houston moment, powering through a formidable number about beloved and loss with searing vulnerability and grace. Information technology's a transcendent achievement that could unmarried-handedly net the singer-turned-extra her beginning Oscar, reminding u.s. nonetheless again that she's one of the best vocalists correct now in any genre, pop or otherwise."[xvi]
